Children and Family Services (CFS) is seeking a Social Work Unit Supervisor to lead the Staff Development team within Child Protection. This supervisor will oversee a team of seven Child Protection Social Worker trainers responsible for designing, coordinating, and delivering professional development opportunities for staff across CFS.

The Staff Development unit plays a critical role in ensuring that new and current social workers are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and tools to provide high-quality, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed services to children and families. The supervisor will support staff in developing and implementing curriculum, identifying training needs, and promoting a learning culture that enhances best practice and workforce excellence.

Location and hours:

This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Human Services Building at 525 Portland Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55415, and remote as job duties require. Work hours will be Monday to Friday, with typical hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

This is a full-time, benefit-earning position. You must be a current regular or probationary employee of Human Services and Public Health to apply for this position. Limited duration employees are not eligible.

In This Position, You Will

  • Supervise and provide leadership to the CFS training team, ensuring quality, consistency, and alignment with departmental priorities.
  • Hire, engage, and develop training staff, fostering an inclusive and supportive team environment.
  • Assess organizational training needs and oversee the development of in-service and ongoing training plans for new and existing social workers.
  • Oversee the creation and facilitation of curriculum across CFS, including topics such as child protection practice, safety and risk assessment, engagement with families, Anti-Oppressive Practices in social work, Active and Reasonable Efforts, and other identified needs.
  • Guide trainers in developing educational materials (e.g., PowerPoints, videos, summaries) and incorporating updates as systems, policy, and best practices evolve.
  • Coordinate with other supervisors, program managers, and departmental leaders to ensure training supports consistent, effective practice across service areas.
  • Promote professional development and continuous improvement through coaching, performance feedback, and ongoing support to trainers.
  • Build and maintain an inclusive, respectful, and collaborative work environment that reflects the county’s mission and values.
  • Represent the training unit on departmental committees and initiatives related to workforce development and practice improvement.

Need To Have

  • One of the following:
    • Six years or more of experience as a Senior/Psychiatric/Child Protection Social Worker at Hennepin County.
    • Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, sociology, or human services, and 27 quarter credits or more of graduate work in areas such as social work methods, human growth and behavior, principles of social welfare, and four years or more of supervised experience as a social worker.
    • Master's degree or higher in social work or closely related field (or licensed as a graduate social worker by the Minnesota Board of Social Work) and three years or more of experience as a social worker.
  • A valid driver's license and daily access to reliable transportation.
