Job Description

Join the forefront of groundbreaking research at City of Hope , where we're changing lives and making a real difference in the fight against cancer, diabetes, and other life-threatening illnesses. Our dedicated and compassionate faculty and staff are driven by a common mission: Contribute to innovative approaches in predicting, preventing, and curing diseases, shaping the future of medicine through cutting-edge research.

A Staff Scientist position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Stephen Gruber at City of Hope. The Staff Scientist series is designed for career research professionals whose primary function is to support the research infrastructure and activities of the institution. Staff Scientists will bring special skills, knowledge and experience to research programs or institutional core laboratories. Individuals appointed as staff scientists will receive a one-year fixed-term contract.

The Staff Scientist in the Center for Precision Medicine will focus on genomic and molecular epidemiology analyses of large datasets to harness genomic-driven insights, clinical expertise, and advanced analytics. The goal is to pioneer personalized prevention and treatment plans that transform outcomes and improve the quality of life for our patients and their families. This position requires extensive experience in clinical and genomic data analysis techniques, as well as electronic medical record data abstraction. The successful candidate will also have experience with cancer ontologies and demonstrated proficiency in R. Additionally, this role will lead and conduct analyses of Real-World Data and Evidence studies related to cancer and precision medicine, with a special emphasis on treatment responses and gastrointestinal cancers, particularly pancreatic cancer.

  • Lead technical groups to understand, scope and deliver on analytic objectives including data acquisition and standardization and proper workflows and statistical techniques.
  • Curate, process, and quality-control large-scale germline and somatic sequencing data (e.g., WES, WGS, panel-based assays) using standard HPC pipelines and cloud-based systems.
  • Compose, implement or refine reproducible statistical analytical workflows applying recommended practices for documentation and filing.
  • Conduct analytic modeling using R/Python (e.g., logistic regression, linear mixed models, PRS analysis) to support genetic association, penetrance, expression, and time-to-event studies. Must have demonstrable knowledge of appropriate statistical techniques for given data types and scientific objectives.
  • Work closely with PIs, laboratory staff, postdocs, and collaborators across multi-institutional projects to harmonize datasets and ensure analytic consistency.
  • Prepare clear, publication-ready figures, summary tables, and data visualizations for manuscripts, grants, and presentations.
  • Contribute to manuscript preparation, methods and results sections for abstracts posters, manuscripts and proposals. Present findings and works-in-progress at lab meetings and collaborative team calls.
  • Provide guidance to junior analysts, trainees, or interns in biostatical/bioinformatics methods, coding best practices, and data interpretation.
Your qualifications should include:
  • The Staff Scientist must possess, at a minimum, the U.S. equivalent Bachelor's or Master's degree in an appropriate discipline, and will often have a Ph.D. or other doctoral level degree.
Preferred qualifications:
