Under the supervision of the Supervising Groundskeeper II, and/or Lead Groundskeeper, incumbents perform gardening and general grounds maintenance work, plants, cultivates, waters and sprays ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees and flowers, and propagates cuttings; plants and cares for lawns; maintains plants along highways and in semiarid regions; rakes leaves, hoes weeds, and performs general grounds maintenance work; prepares and treats soils for planting and spades and fertilizes flower beds and sets out plants; supervises the work of inmate or patient helpers; keeps greenhouses and other buildings in repair and free from diseases and pests; keeps grounds clean and orderly; maintains hoses, tools, supplies, and equipment in proper condition and repair; trims trees, hedges, and shrubs and erects tree supports; does general laboring tasks related to grounds and garden maintenance work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must possess and maintain sufficient strength, agility, endurance, and sensory ability to perform the duties contained in the duty statement.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:Incumbents will be exposed to all Clinical and Support services areas of the facility. Potential exposure to communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens and other conditions common to a clinical nursing environment. Ongoing interaction with personnel and the public. This position requires problem solving skills and ability to communicate effectively. Overtime may be required
WORK LOCATION AND TIMES :Assigned to the Porterville Developmental Center’s (PDC) Plant Operations Department. Works an assigned shift/schedule as assigned by the Chief Engineer I/II. Overtime, weekend, and holiday work is required. Work assignment may be subject to call back based on the operational needs of the facility. Porterville Developmental Center Plant Operations Department’s core business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM. Lunch is from 12:00 to 12:30 PM.
