The First Engineer is responsible for the day to day work in the Engineering Department and is not assigned with watch keeping duties unless otherwise instructed by his superiors.

The First Engineer is responsible for:

Leading the Junior Engineers and engine ratings in executing maintenance and repairs;; Ensuring that the Junior Engineers and ratings are familiar with the Company's Management System relevant to their duties and responsibilities;; Motivating the Junior Engineers and ratings in executing their duties according to the Company's Management System;; Responsible for main, auxiliary and emergency diesel engines;; Ensuring that a robust Safety & Health culture and Environmental & Energy awareness is encouraged and maintained;; Ensuring that Engineering Department activities are well planned, organized and safeguards established against all identified risks;; Ensuring that corrective and preventive actions are implemented in a timely and effective manner;; Ensuring organisation and stowage of spares and consumables, and compliance with stock control requirements;; Reporting directly to the Staff Chief Engineer occurrences that could either directly or indirectly lead to an adverse effect on Quality, Safety, Health, Environment, Security operational capability or reliability;; Reviewing the Company’s Management System on a regular basis and reporting to the Staff Chief Engineer proposals for improvement.;

The First Engineer reports and is accountable to the Staff Chief Engineer.
